Dan Rutherford serves as ICCT’s Senior Director of Research. He works to maintain ICCT’s reputation as a source of first-rate, unbiased research and analysis for environmental regulators by developing and implementing policies to hold its research to the highest standard of excellence. His duties include overseeing staff training, annual research planning, and peer review; managing ICCT’s Research Leads; and advising on communications, development, and hiring. Dan also serves as the ICCT’s acting Aviation Director. In that capacity, he helps national and international regulators develop policies to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gases from planes. Dan has helped design environmental policies at the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization for more than 15 years and is an internationally recognized expert on measures to promote fuel efficiency, to control short-lived climate pollutants, and to phase out the use of fossil fuels in international transport. Dan holds a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota at Morris and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and Science from Stanford University.
