The heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) sector currently stands as a significant contributor, accounting for approximately 58% of India’s on-road transport emissions. Projections indicate that these emissions could nearly double by 2050, a trajectory that is incompatible with both national and international climate commitments. Addressing this challenge is paramount to India’s decarbonization goals and continued economic development.
While policymakers have initiated measures such as HDV fuel consumption standards and the FAME scheme for e-buses, a sustained and broader effort is imperative for the sector’s decarbonization. To bridge the gap between current emissions and the ambitious NET Zero goal, it is essential to explore zero-emission alternatives to diesel HDVs.
In this context, the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) has conducted research on the lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction potential of various fuel pathways and technologies that India can adopt for HDVs. This report, A Comparison Of The Life-cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Combustion And Electric Heavy-duty Vehicles In India, was published in May 2024.
Relatedly, another recent ICCT study, Assessing The Scale Of Zero-emission Truck Deployment Required For Meeting India’s Net-zero Goal, assessed the scale of deploying such vehicles to align with India’s Net-Zero Goal.
This webinar aims to shed light on the potential pathways for decarbonizing India’s HDV sector through innovative vehicle technologies and fuel alternatives.
This discussion will feature projections on shifts in vehicle emissions up to 2030, consider technological advancements, and delve into the impact of current policies on HDV emissions.
