Stephen Jones Bio

Stephen Jones was one of the finest Welsh rugby players of his generation. With more than 100 caps for Wales and six appearances for the British and Irish Lions, he was undoubtedly one of the finest backs to ever play the game.

Born 8 December 1977 in Aberystwyth, Stephen Jones joined Llanelli RFC in 1996. He stayed with the club until 2004 (when the team was known as the Llanelli Scarlets). During this time, he made more than 200 appearances, scoring almost 2,000 points.

Following this, he enjoyed a few seasons with Clermont before he returned to Scarlets, where he made a further 107 appearances. When his playing career was winding down in 2012, he left Scarlets once more and joined London Wasps on a contract that allowed him to become a player-coach. Although his contract was for two years, he retired after one season in 2013.

Throughout his decorated career, Stephen Jones won almost every trophy the game has to offer, including the Six Nations Championship, the Welsh Premier Division and the Celtic League.

By the end of his playing career in 2013, Stephen Jones had collected numerous honours. By the time of his retirement, he was the record cap holder for Wales (although he’s since been overtaken by Gethin Jenkins). He’s currently seventh in the list of leading international rugby union point scorers, and the second-highest Wales player on the list behind Neil Jenkins.

Since retiring, Stephen Jones has enjoyed a career as a coach. Immediately after ending his playing career, he became an attacking coach at London Wasps, where he stayed for two seasons before joining Scarlets as a backs coach. Since 2019, he’s been the attack coach for Wales.
