Wales international in contractual limbo after returning from injury hell
Wales and Cardiff centre Willis Halaholo could make a surprise return to the region this weekend for the opening match of the United Rugby Championship season depending on whether he can sign a deal in time.
The 10-cap Wales international left Cardiff Rugby at the end of last season in the middle of his rehab for a ruptured Achilles, but after spending pre-season with the Welsh outfit, head coach Matt Sherratt is hopeful something can be thrashed out in the coming days so that the 33-year-old is available to face Benetton at Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday.
“We are hoping by the end of this week that we may be able to do something so that he is available for selection this weekend,” Sherratt was reported saying on WalesOnline. “But at the moment, nothing has changed contractually.
“He needs a playing contract. So, we are hoping… he is training, he played in pre-season, he has played for the RFC, he is getting up to speed. It’s the same message as a couple of weeks ago, hopefully something can happen between us and the club, even if it’s short term we can get him on the field.”
Halaholo ran out for Cardiff RFC against Neath RFC last Saturday in the Indigo Premiership, starting at inside centre as Cardiff came away 49-28 winners. He will be hoping that it marks the end of a torrid few years of injuries, which included the most recent ruptured Achilles, a hamstring injury and ACL surgery back in the autumn of 2019.

The weather was dreadful but the playing surface was great so there is no real excuse for such another poor standard of play from both sides. Dragons just the better team. But, what a shocking decision by the TMO not to award the Fifita try. This pretty much sums up Welsh rugby with poor teams and poor officials. The WRU have a lot of work to do and it needs to be done quickly to avoid rugby being lost to our future generations.

He announced his selection policy from the outset with naming a poor OF as Captain, retaining an equally poor Youngs and Vunipola brothers when there were many better EQP in the Premiership. SB revival of Leicester was based on SA muscle and a terrific Welsh flanker he has generally ignored young English talent.
